6 Things You Must Do in Oslo, Norway!

April 2018, I went to Oslo, Norway. Though I did not enjoy all the activities and attractions, I have compiled 6 things which I thoroughly enjoyed that you must do in Oslo.

Urban Art – Set some time aside to visit neighbourhoods rich in urban art, particularly in Tøyen.

In 1899, there was a housing crash that led houses in Oslo to cease getting built and several large walls were left exposed where street artists created beautiful murals. Use the interactive map to find some of the best street art and graffiti in Oslo.

My favourite street art is "The Sky's The Limit", a painting which conveys an important message to those who experience any form of oppression in everyday life. The image itself speaks a thousand words…

“The Sky’s The Limit” by Fadlabi (2006).

The Vigeland Park – The world's largest sculpture park made by a single artist. Impressive right? Vigeland Park offers beautiful scenery on the circle of life through detailed sculptures, from a child playing with his father to older couples cherishing each other.

This park is one which I recollect very well. Loving families walking around with their children, friends having picnics and some sitting on the bench reading. Overall, this park is full of good vibes.

The Royal Palace – Cliché 🙄, I know...

Visiting the Royal Palace during sunrise or sunset when there are few people can be very peaceful. To start or round of your day, you can walk towards Karl Johan’s Gate; a famous street filled café’s, restaurants and shops, so be sure to bring comfy shoes and plenty of money as you will wander off beyond this road 😂.

Oslo Opera House – An architecturally interesting building, aesthetically designed with marble and glass, inviting viewers to a rooftop view of Oslo with the sea beside it.

How I described the Opera House suggests it will leave you captivated, it might not but I think it is worthwhile for taking photos and for the wonderful views it offers.

The National Museum – Ten thousand pornographic videos all condensed to fit into a projector 😲. A picture of what appears to be a girl in her 20’s and in the name of “art” you put chewing gum in her eyes and boom, you monetise it!

I am inspired!

In fact, let me take out an A4 paper and ask you to imagine what you see and monetise it.

Oh no, wait…

Imagine what you see.

Someone beat me to it 😂!

Anyways, the reason for visiting the National Museum was to admire the work of prominent figures in the field of art such as Pablo Picasso and Edvard Munch. I took a picture with the iconic painting which I had always wanted to see as a child.

“The Scream” by Edvard Munch (1983).

A bit unusual, but if you are interested in visiting Edvard Munch’s grave, it is a 10-minute walk to the Cemetery of Our Saviour.

The new National Museum is set to open in 2020.

The Nobel Peace Centre – Malala Yousafzai, Barack Obama and Nelson Mandela. All iconic figures who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

I came to the Nobel Peace Centre with a presumption that it would overemphasise the tragedies around the world instead of the impact these iconic Nobel prize winners had, on promoting change and peace for the betterment of the world we live in. Nevertheless, it was educational. It showed how industries preyed on our anxieties; the need to be something you are not and if you are willing to exploit your morals and values, society will reward you which has commonly been seen amongst celebrities and the music industry.

Walking distance from the Nobel Peace Centre is the Oslo City Hall where each year on December 10th, the City Hall hosts the Nobel Peace Prize awards.

My next post in two weeks time, I will introduce the first series of "My Travel Experience" when I was in Oslo, Norway!
